Duromax XP12000EH Engine Will Not Start

The engine of the Duromax XP12000EH generator will not start due the reasons below.

ReasonSolution
The generator Is Not LevelKeep the generator on a leveled surface
The Engine Switch Is “Off”Turn on the switch
The Fuel Valve Is “Closed”Turn on the fuel valve
Choke Is OpenClose the choke
The Engine Is Out Of FuelRefill the fuel tank
Low, Old, Or Contaminated OilReplace and refill engine oil
Spark Plug Is Dirty Or BrokenClean or replace the spark plug

If you’ve checked all of the possible causes and still having trouble then, you need to take it to a qualified mechanic.

Reason 1: The Generator Is Not Level

When you run the generator on an uneven surface, the oil level also remains uneven. As a result, the oil sensor misreads the oil level to be low.

Solution:

Make sure you are running the generator on a leveled surface. If you must keep the generator on a sloped surface, insert some cardboard or wood piece under the slopped leg of the generator.

Reason 2: The Engine Switch Is “Off”

Sometimes, the generator owners forget to turn on the engine switch and wonder why the generator won’t run.

Solution:

Make sure the Duromax XP12000EH generator engine switch is turned On. Set the generator’s engine to the “Run” position.

Reason 3:The Fuel Valve Is “Closed”

If the fuel valve of your generator is closed, it can not supply fuel to the start during the combustion process.

Solution:

Turn on the fuel valve of your Duromax XP12000EH. In the Duromax XP12000EH generator, the valve is located above the recoil start under the fuel tank. Turn the valve counterclockwise to turn it open.

Reason 4: Choke Is Open

If the choke is open when you start the generator, the engine won’t start.

Solution:

Close the choke on your generator. You will find the air filter on the left side of the recoil start. To close the choke, slide the lever to the left.

Reason 5: The Engine Is Out Of Fuel

Check the fuel level on your generator. If the fuel level of your generator engine is low or runs out, the Duromax XP12000EH generator won’t start

Solution:

On the fuel tank, there is a mark to indicate upper and lower levels. If the fuel is below the lower mark, refill the fuel up to the upper mark.

Reason 6: Low, Old, Or Contaminated Oil

If the oil level on your generator is low, contaminated, or stale, it can restrict the generator from starting. This automatic shut-off system due to an oil problem protects the engine from damage.

Solution:

Check the oil level of your engine as follows.

  1. Unscrewing the dipstick cap
  2. Clean the dipstick so there isn’t any oil
  3. Inserting the dipstick into the oil tank. If the dipstick is dry, that means the oil level is low and you have to refill the oil tank.

Duromax recommended changing the oil every month or every 20 hours of use. To get rid of stale, old, or contaminated oil, change the oil as shown in the following video.

Make sure to use compatible oil only. The best type of oil for the Champion generator may not be the best for DuroMax.

Reason 7: Spark Plug Is Dirty Or Broken

When the spark plug of your generator is dirty or broken, it cannot ignite the combustion. As a result, the engine refuses to start.

Solution:

To fix the spark plug issue, follow these instructions;

  1. Pull the spark plug cap to remove it.
  2. Take the e spark plug wrench that comes with your generator and unscrew the spark plug.
  3. Visually inspect the spark plug. If the plug is cracked, chipped, or worn out, you need to replace it. Make sure you replace it with a compatible spark plug.

Even though all from Champion brand, RC12YC, RC14YC, and XC12YC plugs are different.

  1. If the spark plug is dirty, take a wire brush and gently clean the plug.
